Michael E. Johnson is chief risk officer. Mr. Johnson also serves as a member of the Investment Committee. Mr. Johnson is responsible for the day-to-day management of the firm as well as managing and monitoring all firm-level risks, including establishing an enterprise risk management framework. Additionally, Mr. Johnson serves on the credit research team’s credit committees and performs credit analyses on an ad hoc basis.
Prior to joining Gurtin Municipal Bond Management in February 2008, Mr. Johnson spent three years as director and the head of the Municipal Credit team at Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York, where he oversaw the team that managed and reported municipal credit risk, assigned and maintained internal ratings, approved derivative transactions, and negotiated municipal derivative contracts. During Mr. Johnson’s last year at Merrill Lynch & Co., he was also the head of the Banking and Insurance Credit teams, in addition to the Municipal Credit team. Mr. Johnson began his financial services career as a credit analyst at Moody’s Investors Service. While at Moody’s, he spent seven years as a member of several public finance groups, with the last three years as the co-manager of Moody’s Midwest Regional Office.
Mr. Johnson earned a master’s degree in urban policy analysis and management from the New School for Public Engagement’s Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy (formerly the New School for Social Research) and a bachelor’s degree in ethnic studies from the University of California, Riverside.
